This sixth program in the series, Revere’s Moon, will be presented by Kate Dellenbusch, Teaching Professor, BGSU Department of Physics & Astronomy.

Americans grow up hearing about the midnight ride of Paul Revere, often through Longfellow’s famous poem “Paul Revere’s Ride.” This telling of the story takes many liberties with the historic events of April 18-19, 1775, but it paints a memorable picture of the daring journeys made by Revere and several other riders who set out to warn their fellow colonists of the movements of British forces. Longfellow makes several uses of Moon imagery in his poem. What role did the position and phase of the Moon really play on that momentous night?

This seventh talk in the series, Glass Astronomers: Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler in American Opera, will be presented by Ryan Ebright, Associate Professor, BGSU College of Musical Arts.

The American composer Philip Glass is perhaps most famous for his bicentennial opera Einstein on the Beach, a groundbreaking collaboration with avant-garde director Robert Wilson that was loosely inspired by the life and ideas of physicist Albert Einstein. Among Glass’s more than two dozen subsequent operas, scientists are recurring subjects, including two seventeenth-century astronomers whose work revolutionized humanity’s understanding of the universe. In this multimedia presentation, we will discover how space and those who study it are dramatized musically in Glass’s operas Galileo Galilei (2002) and Kepler (2009).

Join BGSU Firelands for a four-day immersive STEM experience designed for students entering grades 6–8. Participants will conduct hands-on experiments in real laboratory spaces, engage in interactive engineering and design challenges, and explore materials science, sustainability, recycling, and advanced manufacturing.

Students will work alongside BGSU Firelands faculty and STEM professionals while discovering how science connects to future careers and innovation.

This eighth talk in the series, The Universe as Model: Alexander Calder’s Mobile Sculptures in American Art History, will be presented by Andrew Hershberger, Professor, BGSU School of Art.

Starting in the early 1930s and continuing throughout his life, the American artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976) created a remarkable body of sculptures that he called “mobiles.” Unlike most, if not all, earlier sculptures in art history, Calder’s mobiles actually moved and often rotated on a variety of axes. Perhaps the innovative and mechanical aspects of these mobile sculptures caused the French artist Fernand Leger (1881-1955) to describe them as “100 percent American” (in Miller, et al, 2018, p. 432). Calder himself proclaimed of the mobiles that the “underlying sense of form in my work has been the system of the Universe” (in Fineberg 2022, p. 52). With those words, Calder shared the inspiration he received from the way planets revolve around stars, and the way moons revolve around planets, etc. Calder restated his main inspiration this way: “I felt there was no better model for me to choose than the Universe” (as quoted by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum).

Connecting to the theme of innovation in this America 250 lecture series, Calder has often been hailed as the inventor of moving sculptures. Indeed, Calder’s mobile sculptures have been described as a “radical innovation” that transformed the ancient definition of sculpture to its very roots (Fineberg 2022, pp. 53-55). Thus, Calder’s mobiles fit the theme of American discovery and innovation while also connecting to the discipline of astronomy.

On the second Tuesday of every month, the WCDPL Bookmobile will make a regular stop on campus, offering convenient access to books, movies, music and audiobooks. The service will continue through the summer so students, faculty and staff can easily borrow and return library materials without making a special trip off campus.

Whether you are looking for your next great read, a new audiobook for your commute or a film for the weekend, the Bookmobile makes borrowing simple and accessible.

By participating in this session, you will learn how to determine if an existing digital version is available, mitigate imitations of digital copies, and learn best practices for scanning physical books and articles into high-quality digital files that include searchable text (OCR) capabilities as well as the texttoaudio (MP3) function.

This will be followed by a hands-on scanning component, during which you will practice creating accessible digital documents. You will then learn how to verify accessibility compliance and perform basic postproduction remediation to ensure that scanned materials meet accessibility standards and support equitable access for all users.

Apply best practices for converting physical books and articles to digital files. Verify digital accessibly compliance of a PDF.

Perform basic PDF remediation functions utilizing Adobe Acrobat.

HYPE is hosted and curated by Noah Sonie; a full-time performer based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Noah has years of experience performing and showcasing his unique perspective and high energy style on stages across America. During the show students will experience a blend of magic, mindreading, and hypnosis that will weave them through moments of laughter, awe, and pure confusion. For 80 years, SICSIC has helped shape the spirit and traditions that make BGSU unlike anywhere else. If you were part of that story, we invite you to come back to campus and celebrate the legacy you've helped build.

Fort Meigs in the War of 1812 through the Voices of Those Who Fought There, a compelling account of the frontier fort that helped shape the outcome of the War of 1812. Drawing from letters, diaries and other firsthand accounts, many published for the first time, the book brings to life the experiences of soldiers stationed at Fort Meigs during two historic sieges in 1813.

Whether you're passionate about military history, early America, genealogy or local history, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the people, places and events that influenced the future of the Northwest Territory and the United States.

The audience will control the direction of the show by writing their favorite songs on request slips that they bring to the pianos. Energetic and exciting entertainers then perform these songs, while encouraging audience participation.

The fact that many of your favorite rock, r&b and rap songs can be performed on the piano will leave you amazed.

Cost to participate: No pre-sale tickets will be sold. Simply head to the Oaks for dinner, and the show is included with the price of your meal. There will be an entry cost at the door: ​​​$16 for credit/debit (we are cashless) or one meal swipe per person upon entry.
