Dietitians, students and health professionals who want to expand their knowledge of nutrition are welcome to attend. AGENDA 8:30 a.m. Registration 9:00 a.m. Opening Remarks 9:15 a.m. Dr. Kevin Neves, Aquaculture and Sustainability: How it led to a novel, multi-trophic aquaponics system at BGSU. This presentation will cover the issues associated with traditional aquaculture (fish farming) and why changes need to be made in order to ensure sustainable levels. It will also cover emerging technologies such as Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) and how the combination of multiple types of organism can provide sustainable and healthy seafood to people anywhere in the country. The audience can expect to learn the pros and cons of aquaculture and why most (not all) aquaculture is ultimately good for the consumer and should be embraced as such. 10:15 a.m. Break 10:30 a.m. Lisa Andrews, MEd, RD, LD, From Sickness to Health, my Journey as a Nutrition Consultant. Ever wonder what it’s like to be your own boss? Join Lisa Andrews, owner of Sound Bites Nutrition and learn the pros and cons of being a small business owner from cooking on live TV to starting a T-shirt business. 11:30 a.m. Awards 11:45 a.m. Lunch and Poster Session 12:30 p.m. Christin Seher, MS, RDN, LD, Keep Calm and Journey On: Reflexive practice for cultural humility. This presentation will review prevailing models of cultural competence for the dietetics profession and discuss the importance of cultural sensitivity and cultural humility in contemporary dietetics practice while providing practical strategies for engaging in personal reflection around diverse dimensions of identity. Audience members will leave having considered their personal objectives for enhancing cultural reflexivity in practice. 1:30 p.m. Break 2:00 p.m. Dr. Melissa Billing, Our Health is all Connected: How human, animal and environmental health go hand-in-hand. This presentation highlights how human, animal and environmental health go hand-in-hand, and how farmers focus on animal health to ensure food safety, animal well-being and environmental sustainability. Using pig farming as a case study, the presentation addresses growing concerns about how food animals are raised, including the use of antibiotics, by demonstrating how farmers work with their veterinarians to ensure responsible antibiotic use and protect these medicines for human and animal health. 3:00 p.m. Closing Remarks

Exhibit - The Monster, Transformed: The Many Faces of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in the 20th Century

The Browne Popular Culture Library presents its new exhibit The Monster, Transformed: The Many Faces of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in the 20th Century. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus was first published in 1918, and in the 200 years since has become an important cultural touchstone. The Browne Popular Culture Library’s exhibit, on display until November 4, looks at many ways in which Shelley’s text and its famous monster were reinterpreted beginning in the 20th century. The display includes posters, books, toys, comics, and more based on the story of Dr. Frankenstein and his monster.

Winter Wheat Festival of Writing

Winter Wheat, created in 2001, is a festival celebrating writers and readers, produced by Mid-American Review and hosted on the campus of Bowling Green State University. In workshops, writers gather to learn, discuss, and most importantly write. At readings, special guest authors read their work, sign books, and talk with Winter Wheat participants. Winter Wheat creates the ideal environment for graduate and undergraduate students, faculty and staff, and community writers, locally and beyond, to mingle and create new work, effectively planting the seeds of new writings for future harvest. The opening session, Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. is presented in Prout Chapel. The workshops, readings and book fair on Friday and Saturday are in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union.
