The Great Lake Erie Photography Exhibition

“The Great Lake Erie" features photography by American landscape photographer Frank Gohlke, and Lynn Whitney, head of the BGSU photography division. The photographs are on display through Nov. 24 in the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery Lobby in the BGSU Fine Arts Center.  In conjunction with the exhibition, Frank Gohlke will present an Art Talk on Monday, Oct. 21 About the Artists: Frank Gohlke is the recipient of two Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships, a Fulbright Scholar Grant, and two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts; as well as others. His monographs include Landscapes from the Middle of the World: Photographs 1972 – 1987 (1988); Measure of Emptiness: Grain Elevators in the American Landscape (1992); The Sudbury River: A Celebration (1993); and Mount St. Helens (2005). His work has been exhibited at major museums internationally, and is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. He has taught photography at Middlebury College; Colorado College; Yale University; and the Massachusetts College of Art.  A faculty member at BGSU since 1987, Lynn Whitney is an associate professor and area head of Photography in the School of Art. She received a solo exhibition in 2007 at the Toledo Museum of Art, "From Start to Finish: Photographs of the I-280 Bridge Project", and has been included in the Midwest Photographer's Project at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, 2003-2005 and 2006-2008. Her work is represented in public and private collections including the Toledo Museum of Art, the "Bridge Project" portfolio; the Cleveland Clinic; the Lea Gallery at the University of Findlay; The Southwest Center for Photographic Studies; University of Northern Iowa; Sterling Library, and Yale University.   This exhibition is made possible in part by state tax dollars allocated by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically.

Canvas Conferences and WebEx Workshop

The Rhetoric Society of the Black Swamp Presents the first Graduate Student Spotlight featuring three of the program's doctoral students: Bailey Poland, Emma Guthrie, and Brandie Bohney. At only 45 minutes, this spotlight session will be short and sweet, with each presenter allotted 10 minutes to talk about a project currently in-the-works, but not necessarily stemming from course work.

Lake Erie: On the Edge Photography Exhibition

"Lake Erie: On the Edge" features photo by internationally known photographer Linda Butler. The show opens Sept. 20 and runs through Nov. 24.  Linda Butler is an internationally known, prize-winning fine-arts photographer, known for her explorations of other cultures. Her books include Yangtze Remembered: The River Beneath the Lake (Stanford University Press ©2004), Italy: In the Shadow of Time (Rizzoli International ©1998), Rural Japan: Radiance of the Ordinary (Smithsonian Institution Press ©1992), and Inner Light: The Shaker Legacy (Knopf ©1985). Butler has had more than fifty one-person exhibitions in the United States, Canada, and Japan. Her photographs have appeared in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, and the Yokohama Museum of Art in Japan. In conjunction with the exhibition, Butler will present an Art Talk on Monday, September 23.

School of Art Exhibition: Miwa Matreyek

The BGSU School of Art presents an exhibition of Miwa Matreyek's video performances. Matreyek is an animator, director, designer, and performer based in Los Angeles.  Coming from a background in animation by way of collage, Miwa Matreyek creates live, staged performances where she interacts with her animations as a shadow silhouette, at the cross-section of cinematic and theatrical, fantastical and tangible, illusionistic and physical.  She performs her interdisciplinary shadow performances all around the world, including animation/film festivals, theater/performance festivals, art museums, science museums, and tech conferences.

Start the Conversation is an interactive training designed to build skills in recognizing and responding to students and others who may be struggling or in crisis.  The training is offered in partnership with the Humanities Troupe to engage participants in discussion and reflection about possible scenarios or difficult conversations they may encounter, including ways to intervene when someone might be considering suicide.  The training is facilitated by a member of BGSU's Counseling Center staff.

Soprano Jennifer Rowley is acclaimed worldwide for her unforgettable voice and remarkable stage presence, singing a richly varied repertoire that includes many of opera’s greatest heroines. In the 2019/20 season, Ms. Rowley returns to the Metropolitan Opera to reprise two of her signature Puccini roles: the title role of Tosca, and Musetta in La Bohème. Dr. Nicole M. Jackson, associate professor of History, shares her new work on  the British Caribbean Arts Movement of the late 1960s-1970s. This period produced an array of artists exploring the legacies of slavery, empire and postcolonial identity. A new generation of black women writers explored what it meant to be Black, British and female in the UK. In this public talk, Dr. Jackson considers Black women’s writing as productive of an alternative canon of British literature, in which the colonized observed, judged and redefined “home.”

Artist Talk - Maurice Cherry

Maurice Cherry is the head of media at Glitch, the friendly community where everyone can discover and create the best stuff on the web. Before Glitch, Maurice was principal and creative director at Lunch, a multidisciplinary creative studio in Atlanta, GA.  These days, Maurice is perhaps most well known for his award-winning podcast Revision Path, which showcases Black designers, developers, and digital creators from all over the world. Other projects of Maurice’s include the Black Weblog Awards, the Web's longest running event celebrating Black bloggers, video bloggers, and podcasters, 28 Days of the Web, and The Year of Tea. Maurice is the 2018 recipient of the Steven Heller Prize for Cultural Commentary from AIGA, was named as one of GDUSA’s “People to Watch” in 2018, and was included in the 2018 edition of The Root 100 (#60), their annual list of the most influential African-Americans ages 25 to 45.
