Native American Displays and Exhibits

Jerome Library, Lobby

On the first floor of Jerome Library there will be posters highlighting Native American and Indigenous Peoples materials in various library collections. On the fourth floor, the Browne Popular Culture Library will exhibit materials showing the problematic nature of “positive stereotypes” for Native Americans. On the third floor, the Music Library will exhibit recordings under the record labels Indian House and Inka Records. The Curriculum Resource Center will have an exhibit on the second floor celebrating Native American Heritage. The first floor display will run until end of the semester.

The Great Lake Erie Photography Exhibition

“The Great Lake Erie" features photography by American landscape photographer Frank Gohlke, and Lynn Whitney, head of the BGSU photography division. The photographs are on display through Nov. 24 in the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery Lobby in the BGSU Fine Arts Center.  In conjunction with the exhibition, Frank Gohlke will present an Art Talk on Monday, Oct. 21 About the Artists: Frank Gohlke is the recipient of two Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships, a Fulbright Scholar Grant, and two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts; as well as others. His monographs include Landscapes from the Middle of the World: Photographs 1972 – 1987 (1988); Measure of Emptiness: Grain Elevators in the American Landscape (1992); The Sudbury River: A Celebration (1993); and Mount St. Helens (2005). His work has been exhibited at major museums internationally, and is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. He has taught photography at Middlebury College; Colorado College; Yale University; and the Massachusetts College of Art.  A faculty member at BGSU since 1987, Lynn Whitney is an associate professor and area head of Photography in the School of Art. She received a solo exhibition in 2007 at the Toledo Museum of Art, "From Start to Finish: Photographs of the I-280 Bridge Project", and has been included in the Midwest Photographer's Project at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, 2003-2005 and 2006-2008. Her work is represented in public and private collections including the Toledo Museum of Art, the "Bridge Project" portfolio; the Cleveland Clinic; the Lea Gallery at the University of Findlay; The Southwest Center for Photographic Studies; University of Northern Iowa; Sterling Library, and Yale University.   This exhibition is made possible in part by state tax dollars allocated by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically.

School of Art Exhibition: Miwa Matreyek

The BGSU School of Art presents an exhibition of Miwa Matreyek's video performances. Matreyek is an animator, director, designer, and performer based in Los Angeles.  Coming from a background in animation by way of collage, Miwa Matreyek creates live, staged performances where she interacts with her animations as a shadow silhouette, at the cross-section of cinematic and theatrical, fantastical and tangible, illusionistic and physical.  She performs her interdisciplinary shadow performances all around the world, including animation/film festivals, theater/performance festivals, art museums, science museums, and tech conferences.

Professor Spoon will discuss these and other topics, which will provide an understanding of the changing landscape of European politics in 2019. About the Speaker Jae-Jae Spoon is a professor of political science and director of the European Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh. She is co-editor of the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties (JEPOP) and Research & Politic s (R&P.) Her research focuses on comparative electoral behavior primarily in Europe. WebEx Online Workshop

WebEx is a program used to communicate through the use of audio and video over the Internet. This workshop will be conducted online through a WebEx meeting. It will include a facilitator-lead demonstration, provide examples of uses for WebEx, and also include a hands-on session. Bowling Green State University and the Ohio Arts Council will host a dedication ceremony for "Shadows," a new work of art by Erwin Redl. The installation, in the 4th floor stairwells of Moseley Hall, is funded by the Ohio Percent for Art Program. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
