Learning Community Room Selection Takes Place

NEW & TRANSFER STUDENTS | New learning community members select their on-campus room during this time. New students will only be able to select their room if they have completed the following: Online housing application Paid the $200 initial housing payment  Applied and accepted into their community of choice Room selection will begin after noon on March 18 and will close at 9 a.m. on May 1. If a student is a member of a community that does not require them to live in a learning community room, and the student decides they do not want to live with their community, they would follow the standard room selection process. ONLY learning community rooms will be available during this time. There are two different room selection processes that take place for learning community rooms. Each spring, the senior Master of Fine Arts students in the School of Art have the opportunity to showcase their work at this premier exhibition. These consummate works of the students fill the gallery spaces in the Fine Arts Center for a two-week show. April 27, the opening night, offers an opening reception from 7-9 p.m. in the Galleries.  Admission is free to the exhibition and special events.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Counseling Center host Sister to Sister, a women of color support group. As women of color, the journey at BGSU can be complex, exhausting, rewarding, and challenging. In the spirit of communal learning and healing, Sister to Sister is a space that aims to provide women of color support and a chance to come together for discussion around various topics related to how we experience life at BGSU. The group is widely attended by undergraduate and graduate students, but has also been attended by BGSU faculty and staff. Topics varied per session; topics included: isolation as a student of color, gender bias in majors/programs, forming community, addressing and responding to racism and barriers in higher education, mental health and wellness, relationships and love, handling familial conflict, sexuality in women of color spaces, and the challenges of being an international student of color in higher education

We Got Each Other is a weekly discussion series that focuses on black male undergraduate student success in college and beyond. The gatherings provide a welcoming space for fellowship, connection and support and discussions are facilitated by Black male student leaders, faculty and/or staff. Topics vary from week to week, but are primarily focused on what it means to be a Black male at BGSU, career development, the pitfalls as well as the triumphs, how to use the resources, how to ask for help, how to deal with pressures from home, and what it takes to graduate. Topics have ranged from “bringing the hood to campus”, perceptions of “smart” Black males, dating and relationships to current/world events such as domestic abuse, immigration, police violence, homelessness and more.

Tarana Burke will share the story behind the genesis of the viral 2017 TIME Person Of The Year-winning ‘me too.’ Movement, and gives strength and healing to those who have experienced sexual trauma or harassment.  The simple yet courageous ‘me too.’ hashtag campaign has emerged as a rallying cry for people everywhere who have survived sexual assault and sexual harassment – and Tarana’s powerful, poignant story as creator of what is now an international movement that supports survivors will move, uplift, and inspire you.
