100th Anniversary Gala: BG Philharmonia and Choirs present Beethoven's Ninth Symphony

Sun, May 5, 2019 3pm to 4:30pm

Moore Musical Arts Center, Kobacker Hall

$7 adults, $3 students/children; $10 all tickets, day of performance. No charge for BGSU students with ID card.
Culminating a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the BG Philharmonia, the orchestra will join forces with over 150 voices from our A Cappella Choir, Collegiate Chorale, and University Choral Society to present Beethoven's iconic Ninth Symphony. One of the most popular works of classical music, the Ninth Symphony is widely regarded as one of Beethoven's greatest compositions. It was the first symphony composed to include a chorus. The text, Ode to Joy, by Friedrich Schiller, is often read as a celebration of our universal common humanity. The famous American conductor Leonard Bernstein led the work in 1989 when the Berlin Wall fell, replacing the word Freude (Joy) with Freiheit (Freedom). The orchestra and chorus were made up of performers from both West and East Germany. The Ode to Joy theme is also the adopted anthem of the European Union. The popularity and message of the work make it the perfect way to conclude our 100th year celebration.  Purchase your tickets here. This concert will also be livestreamed. Featured vocal soloists: Sujin Lee, soprano, Tina Bunce, mezzo-soprano, Christopher Scholl, tenor, Dennis Jesse, bass Program Centennial for Symphony Orchestra.........................Samuel Adler Symphony No. 9 in D minor, opus 125.......................Ludwig van Beethoven I.
