BGSU Celebrates Masculinities Month

BGSU MEN SHARE THEIR PERSPECTIVES In 2019, the Center for Violence Prevention and Education (CVPE) began recognizing November as Masculinities Month to:  Assist men on campus in identifying between healthy and unhealthy masculinities Recognize and describe how gender roles, power and privilege play a role in what it means to be masculine Be empowered to be an active bystander and identify various ways in supporting others. To start the conversation, CVPE reached out to students, staff and faculty on campus and asked them to share their personal stories on how unhealthy masculinity has permeated their lives and impacted their relationships.  BGSU men on campus share their male perspectives and bring awareness to healthy masculinities, vulnerability, and personal values. Listen to these stories from students, faculty and staff! LISTEN TO THEIR STORIES Brian Heilmeier, Associate Dean of Students for Campus Activities Discusses being an undergraduate fraternity member and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Chet Hesson, Associate Athletics Director for Academics & Student Services Discusses challenging relationships with his father and vulnerability as a man. Gabe Dunbar, Design Your Life Coach Discusses non-traditional gender roles within a family dynamic and healthy and empowered parenting. Isiah Vazquez, BGSU Alumni Discusses being a member of a fraternity at BGSU and practicing healthy and open communication with his brothers. Jacob Clemens, Associate Dean of Students Discusses relationships with students, specifically male students and demonstrating empathy. Michael Brown, Manager of Guest Relations Discusses personal childhood challenges and his personal path assisting young men in their journey to being REAL. Nick Rybak, Prevention Specialist at The Cocoon Discusses challenging masculinities because of his passion to be a social worker and help others. Rob Snyder, Associate Professor and Chair, Library Teaching & Learning Discusses feminine and masculine hobbies and how he uses crafts to aid in his parenting. Robert Woodley, TRIO Educational Advisor Discusses his experience growing up with toxic masculinity and how he has switched the narrative as a parent and educator. Sean Oros, Assistant Director of the Honors Learning Community Discusses vulnerability and making it safe for others to do the same.
