Screening: I am a Girl (2013)

Wed, Mar 11, 2020 11:30am to 1pm

BGSU Firelands, 1st Floor Student Lounge, North Building

There is a group of people in the world today who are more persecuted than anyone else, but they are not political or religious activists. They are girls. Being born a girl means you are more likely to be subjected to violence, disease, poverty and disadvantage than any other group on Earth. In I AM A GIRL, we meet 14-year-old Kimsey from Cambodia, forced to sell her virginity at 12; Aziza from Afghanistan, who will be shot if she goes to school; Breani, a teen living in a ghetto of NYC and dreaming of stardom; Katie from Australia, who is recovering from a suicide attempt; Habiba from Cameroon, betrothed to a man 20 years her senior; and Manu from Papua New Guinea, about to become a mother at 14 following her first sexual encounter. As they come of age in the way their culture dictates, we see remarkable heart-warming stories of resilience, bravery and humor. Nominated for four Australian Academy Awards including Best Documentary and Best Director, I AM A GIRL is an inspirational feature length documentary that paints a clear picture of the reality of what it means to be a girl in the 21st century. "This is an affecting and powerful film that reveals the prejudice girls face the world over." - Greg King, Megaphone Oz

Global Leadership Certificate: Session 2: Self-Awareness as a Global Leader

Wed, Mar 11, 2020 6pm to 7:30pm

Business Administration 103

The Global Leadership Certificate (GLC) is a program that will help you develop the attitudes, knowledge, and skills for global leadership in an increasingly global world. This program is an excellent opportunity to incorporate this competency into your leadership toolkit, meet people who share your interests, and increase your understanding of our global world and its connection to you and the BGSU community. Employers are looking for leaders who value and develop communication styles that are respectful of cultural contexts and that reflect an understanding of diversity and the implications this has on both individual and group leadership. Are you hooked? Here are the details! Education sessions will occur on Wednesdays, 6:00-7:30pm, in Business Administration 103. Ideally, sessions should be attended in order, however if you cannot make it to a session, you can talk with the facilitators about how to make up the session. A full outline of steps to earning the GLC will be covered at the first session. For more information, contact leadership@bgsu.edu. You can sign up for the GLC at www.bgsu.edu/GLC.
