CWGE Research Seminar with Rebecca Stanwick

Wed, Oct 25, 2023 12pm to 1pm

Hayes Hall, 203

Rebecca Stanwick presents "The Sex Panic of the 1790s and the Politicization of Women’s Education in the Early American Republic" on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from Noon - 1 p.m. in Hayes Hall 203.    America has never been comfortable with sex. Since its inception as English colonies, the nation and its political leaders have used moral and religious rhetoric to restrict and oppress sex, gender and sexuality. In the 1790s, this sex panic took the form of moral and prescriptive literature that was meant to construct a form of womanhood that exemplified moral innocents and civic virtues. This act of gender construction via women’s education is a neglected area of educational history yet one that resonates with today's political climate and the co-opting of public education for political ends. Using a feminist theoretical lens, this presentation seeks to understand how the conceptualization of women’s education in the nineteenth century, with its emphasis on domestic education, was a deliberate and direct response to the sex panic of the 1790s by elite white men to solidify political power and subvert feminist claims of female equality.   Rebecca is currently an Assistant Teaching Professor - Reference and Instruction Librarian at Jerome Library. She received her master’s in Library Science from Indiana University – Bloomington and also holds a B.A. in Art History and English Literature, an M.A. in English Literature and an M.E. in Education. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the History of Education at the University of Toledo writing her dissertation on sex panics, gender construction and women’s education in early America.
