Research Seminar: Protecting Whom: Women’s Sport and Trans Inclusion

Wed, Nov 15, 2023 12pm to 1pm

Hayes Hall, 203

Join the Center for Women and Gender Equity for our Research Seminar with Vikki Krane! We have heard the calls to protect women’s sport which has resulted in proposed legislation around the country attempting to ban or limit trans participation in sport. Much of the rationale for excluding transgender individuals from participating in sport are based on cultural narratives about sex and gender rather than sound science. Accordingly, much proposed and enacted policy appears to be created without a thorough understanding of the lived experiences of trans athletes and mimics cultural assumptions about testosterone, which are not always supported by research. In this presentation, Dr. Krane will juxtapose common concerns forwarded by groups advocating to protect women’s sport with scholarly knowledge about transgender athletes.
