Science Café at Grounds For Thought

Thu, Oct 17, 2024 6:30pm to 7:30pm

Grounds for Thought

Stream Available

Join BGSU’s Science Café and guest speaker Vern Bingman in our next event!    The talk being given is called “The Genius of Animal Navigation” and will cover several interesting topics aimed at students, faculty, staff, and the general BG public- including K-12 students!    Practically all moving animals display a capacity for navigation, but birds are considered by many as the animal kingdom’s supreme navigators. Drawing on behavioral and neurobiological experimental findings, this event will offer often surprising insight into the navigational ability of migratory birds and homing pigeons, and the brain mechanisms that enable their spatial behavior. Complementing our conversation on birds, we will take a detour into the New World tropics to explore the remarkable navigational ability of charismatic, nocturnal predatory whip spiders.   Vern received his BS at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his MS and PhD at SUNY-Albany. His postdoctoral positions have included University of Frankfurt, Germany, University of Pisa, Italy, and the University of Maryland-College Park. Currently he is a professor at Bowling Green State University.   Dr. Bingman has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles, and he has been awarded numerous extramural research grants and international/national fellowships including a Humboldt Fellowship (Germany) and three Fulbright Fellowships. He is also a “National Geographic Explorer” for his research on tropical whip spider navigation.   There will be refreshments at Grounds, but please no outside food or drink.

Life Sciences Building, 112

Join us in the Planetarium for the next public talk in the Expanding Boundaries Speakers Series, titled “The Harvard Computers: The Women Who Launched Twentieth Century Astronomy,” presented by Gary Kader, Director of Burrell Observatory and Lecturer at Baldwin Wallace University. “The Harvard Computers: The Women Who Launched Twentieth Century Astronomy” is a story about how the right people came together with new technology, and scientific understanding to make the discoveries that lead to some of the greatest advances in astronomy. Our understanding of the light spectrum came in the late 1800’s which opened a new area of astronomical study. Around the same time, dry plate photography was invented. This combination moved astronomy from the observatory to the laboratory. To staff his lab, Edward Pickering at the Harvard Observatory hired a number of women to do the photographic analysis. The discoveries they made, launched twentieth century astronomy. This program is part of a series of six sessions on a wide range of interdisciplinary topics, each with a connection to astronomy. Programs in the series will be every other Thursday throughout the semester and will follow the regularly scheduled 6:30 p.m. Planetarium show. All Expanding Boundaries Speakers Series events are free and open to the public.  This talk will also be available to livestream via Zoom.

Poor Clare

Thu, Oct 17, 2024 8pm to 10pm

Wolfe Center for the Arts, Eva Marie Saint Theatre (Wolfe 124)

Varies
THE STORY: It’s 1211 in Assisi, Italy, and Clare’s got beauty, wealth, and a rich suitor who showers her with expensive presents. So why is she so drawn to this guy Francis who gave up all his possessions just because poor people are suffering? Everyone in town says he’s crazy. And yet…she starts seeing everything in her life differently. This hilarious, anachronistic telling of the real story of St. Clare considers the cost of doing good—and how little has changed for the haves and the have-nots in almost a millennium. (from Dramatist Play Service: dramatists.com) Sara Lapinski Chambers, Director   ---------------------------------------- Falcon Family Weekend Oct. 18-20 | This event is part of Falcon Family Weekend, an annual tradition for parents, family members, and supporters to visit, create memories, participate in events, and explore campus and the local community.
