Setting a Course for Student Success in the First Two Weeks

Please note: This is a two-day workshop scheduled for Thursday, May 2 and Friday, May 3, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. You must be able to participate in the entirety of the two-day workshop in order to register and participate in this event Facilitators:   Dr. Emily Anzicek, Provost’s Fellow for Undergraduate Curriculum & Teaching Professor, School of Media & Communications  Dr. Sherona Garrett- Ruffin, Teaching Professor and Vice Chair of Undergraduate Instruction, Department of Psychology  Dr. Siva priya Santhanam, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Assistant Professor, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders & CFE Faculty Associate  Mike Zickar, Professor, Department of Psychology  Dr. Chelsea Chandler, CFE Director   Workshop description & learning outcomes:  The first two weeks of a semester are a crucial part of developing a sense of belonging and a pathway toward success for our students. In this hands-on workshop, which takes place across two half days, we will explore strategies for engaging students, setting meaningful expectations for the semester, and providing students with early, actionable feedback. Led by the CFE and faculty facilitators, we will discuss inclusive evidence-based teaching strategies, syllabus best practices, formative assessments, and lesson planning to facilitate a sense of belonging and engagement among our students. Upon completion of the workshop, you will have an intentional, student-centered plan for the first two weeks of class. Please bring a laptop and any course materials you have for your Fall 2024 course(s). Lunch is provided both days.   In this workshop, you will:   Explore inclusive, evidence-based teaching strategies that motivate students and foster a sense of belonging.    Analyze your course syllabus for clarity, tone, and transparent expectations.    Develop an instructional outline for the first two weeks of your class incorporating evidence-based teaching strategies and formative assessments.    Develop a detailed lesson plan for at least one class session outlining evidence-based teaching strategies and formative assessments.  . Registration is open to full-time qualified rank faculty (QRF), tenure-track faculty (TTF), and adjunct instructors teaching a Fall 2024 course.  To register for this workshop, use the CFE Workshop Registration Form: Setting a Course for Student Success in the First Two Weeks Advance registration is required. Registration is first-come, first served and will be capped at 20 participants.  To find out more information about this workshop, visit the Workshop & Event Catalog page of the CFE Website.    If you have any questions about this event, email the CFE at cfe@bgsu.edu     If you need special services, assistance or appropriate modifications to fully participate in the event, please contact the CFE office or Accessibility Services at access@bgsu.edu or 419-372-8495.
