Lamb Peace Lecture with Benjamin McKean

Mon, Apr 13, 2026 5pm to 6:30pm

Education Building, 115

Free and open to the public
The Lamb Peace Lecture has long been a staple of Bowling Green State University community. Endowed by the Edward Lamb Foundation, the Department of Political Science is pleased to host this lecture on April 13th, 2026. This year's guest is Dr. Benjamin McKean, Associate Professor of Political Science at Ohio State University, presenting "Hope, Despair and Nonviolence in a Warming World."  Climate change is already a significant cause of conflict in the world, as droughts, rising sea levels, and other changing weather patterns force people to move and make resources scarce. The prospect for achieving peace and justice can seem slim today - is there any reason for hope? Or should we instead embrace despair as an appropriate response to a world that seems inexorably to be getting worse? In this talk, Dr. McKean will invite us to consider the advantages and disadvantages of using hope to motivate political action as well as why nonviolent social change seems so hard to imagine today.  McKean is a political theorist whose research concerns global justice, populism, and the relationship between theory and practice. McKean has a Ph.D. from Princeton University in Political Theory, and his writing has been published in academic journals including American Political Science Review and Political Theory as well as in popular media including The Washington Post and Jacobin.
