Keynote Speakers: 

  • Sheena Barnes: Personal pronouns She/Her,They/Them is a Flint, Michigan native she has resided in Toledo, OH for 15 years with her three children. Ms. Barnes background is in trauma informed care and as a community engagement specialist she focused on the correlation of trauma to reactive negative behaviors in youth. Sheena has experience with public policy and youth crisis intervention advocacy and resource management.
  • Benita Robinson: A lifelong Detroiter, learner, and social justice advocate. Centering the voices of those most marginalized, she has over 10 years’ of experience in advocacy and activism in gender-based violence, pay equity, leadership development, racial equity, trauma-informed program development & and management, and community education.
  • Meghan Michael: A co-founder and partner of the Collective Resilience Institute, a company that facilitates team and organizational resilience training. She is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and has over thirty years of leadership and operational experience as a career Naval Officer. She is a certified Professional in Human Resources and Society for Human Resources Management Certified Professional, a certified practitioner in EQ-I 2.0/EQ 360, and a World Rugby Level 1 certified coach and referee. 

This annual event brings women of color activist-scholars to BGSU to discuss the contributions women of color have made to leadership, activism and advocacy in their communities and more broadly. 

The summit features a panel discussion open to students, faculty, staff and community members where guest speakers will share insight on their own achievements, obstacles and the steps they have taken to become the incredible leaders they are.

Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions and, after the panel, the speakers will lead smaller discussion groups to allow participants to make additional connections, identify potential mentors and determine how they can take the next step in their own leadership path.
