This workshop is for faculty and staff who would like to learn the basics of integrating community-based learning (also known as service-learning) pedagogy into their course or program and how to identify and establish a relationship with a community partner. In this workshop the Center for Public Impact (CPI) will provide examples of different levels of community-based learning involvement that can be applied to diverse topics and disciplines. CPI will also provide a variety of models of campus-community partnerships.  Workshop goals and learning objectives include:

  • To define and clarify working definitions of community-based learning and other terms associated with this pedagogical practice.
  • To increase awareness of community-based learning pedagogy.
  • To train faculty and staff in best practices of reflection, community partnerships, and civic learning outcomes.
  • To learn about how the Center for Public Impact can support community-based learning.
  • To share examples of BGSU community-based learning courses and programs.
  • To share resources for the effective design and implementation of community-based resources including sample syllabi, community partnership agreements, reflection models, civic learning outcomes, and professional development opportunities.
