About this Event
Jerome Library, Bowling Green, OH 43403
AmeriCorps Week of Service Event
Open to students, faculty, staff and community members.
Join the BGSU Center for Archival Collections (CAC) and ServeOhio, Ohio's commission on service and volunteerism, for a hands-on community service event that focuses on preserving and expanding access to women’s history.
Volunteers will help transcribe handwritten cursive historical documents from the CAC, including materials related to women’s lives, work and community involvement. These transcriptions make archival collections more accessible for all types of research.
No prior experience with archives or transcription is required.
What You’ll Do
Participants will read handwritten cursive documents and use provided laptops to create typed transcripts. Volunteers may stay for as long or as little time as they are able and work at their own pace. Training and guidance will be provided throughout the day.
Why It Matters
Many historical documents exist only in handwritten form, which limits their discoverability and use online. Many researchers find cursive to be challenging to read. By creating transcripts, volunteers help turn these materials into searchable digital resources that support accessibility, public history and community research.
Light snacks and beverages will be available.
Advance registration is encouraged but not required. Drop-ins are welcome!
For questions about registration or the event, email Jennifer Long Morehart or call 419-372-9614.
