Please join the CDIS Department for a virtual event, “Disadvantage, Resilience, and Inclusion: Perspectives and Reflections on being an Underrepresented Student and Professional”, presented by Dr. Derek Daniels on Tuesday April 6th, 2021
Description:
How can having an underrepresented identity affect the well-being and experiences of students and professionals in Communication Sciences and Disorders? This presentation will focus on perspectives of what it can mean to have an underrepresented identity (with particular emphasis on race and sexual orientation), perspectives on intersectionality, personal reflections of the speaker’s experiences, and ideas for inclusive environments.

About the presenter:
Dr. Derek E. Daniels is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Wayne State University and an alumni of the CDIS Ph.D. program at BGSU. He is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist who specializes in stuttering therapy. Dr. Daniels is a person who stutters, conducts research on psychosocial aspects of stuttering, and supervises graduate student training. He has participated in many self-help events, workshops, and clinical training programs for people who stutter. Dr. Daniels is a native of Houston, TX, and currently enjoys urban life in Detroit. He is currently the President-Elect of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association (MSHA).
