Join the Science Café at Juniper Brewing Company for a talk titled "Variable Stars – Clues to Comprehending the Cosmos" and a Q&A with Professor Andrew Layden. This is an all ages event for any member of the community who is interested in science/astronomy.

A small fraction of stars change their brightness over time. The causes are many and varied; one cause is pulsation, the periodic expansion and contraction of the star. We will discuss the process, the evidence, and the utility of these stars to an observational science where traditional controlled experiments are not possible.

Our speaker, Andy, grew up near Hartford, CT and got interested in physics in high school, then astronomy in college. Degrees in Astronomy from CT universities led him to postdoctoral research in Chile, Canada, and at the University of Michigan before landing at BGSU. Andy has worked with ground based-telescopes, both large and small, in both hemispheres, as well as the Hubble Space Telescope.

Snacks and drinks will be provided. Please pre-register for an accurate head-count.
