About this Event
February 8, 2024, will mark the 50th anniversary of the American situation comedy Good Times, which aired on the CBS network until Aug. 1, 1979. Good Times was remarkable for its time because the series featured the first intact Black nuclear family, the Evanses, on primetime television. After an overview of Black television sitcoms that aired before 1974, the presentation will explore Good Times as a '70s milestone because of its groundbreaking representations of family, class, race and gender and will close with highlighting the legacy of Good Times in contemporary depictions of the twenty-first-century urban Black working-class nuclear family. This talk will be presented by Dr. Angela Nelson, School of Cultural and Critical Studies.
