Demystifying Autism through Lived Experiences & Community Knowledge

Tue, Sep 9, 2025 6pm to 7:30pm

Bowen-Thompson Student Union, Room 206

Step beyond common myths and media portrayals to explore what autism truly means. In this session, you’ll begin with a brief introduction to autism fundamentals, then engage in an interactive panel discussion featuring autistic individuals and their allies.  Through direct dialogue with panelists, you’ll hear personal stories, challenge assumptions, and explore topics like autism history, reframing autistic characteristics, and supportive strategies. You’ll have the chance to reflect, ask questions, and gain practical ideas for creating more inclusive and supportive environments—whether in the workplace, classroom, or broader community.  By participating in this session, you will be able to:  Identify and compare current misconceptions about autism with historical stigmas, and explain their impact on the autistic community.  Recognize and reframe commonly misunderstood autistic traits—such as stimming or sensory needs—through a strengths-based, neurodiversity-informed lens.  Apply at least three supportive strategies shared by panelists to make your workplace, school, or community more inclusive.  Develop an action plan to implement one meaningful change in your personal or professional life based on panelist insights.  To register for this event, use the Fall 2025 Campus Partner CFE Session Registration Form.  Advance registration is required. Registration will close one business day before the scheduled event. You will receive the Zoom link one day before the event.  For more information on this event, visit the Session Catalog page of the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) website.    If you need special services, assistance or appropriate modifications to fully participate in the event, please contact the CFE office or Accessibility Services at access@bgsu.edu or 419-372-8495.
