Winter Wheat Writing Festival 2025

  Winter Wheat Writing Festival, an event sponsored by BGSU Department of English's publication Mid-American Review, celebrates its 25th birthday with a weekend of inspiration, exploration and connection for writers of all levels. Join us to plant the seeds for creative harvest through generative writing workshops, guest readings, a regional bookfair, and a celebratory open mic. Events open Thursday, November 6, in Prout Chapel, with a guest reading by MFA alum author Paula J. Lambert and distinguished poet Juan Armando Rojas Joo. Mid-American Review recently published Lambert's translations of Joo's work. The festival continues in the Education Building with a wide variety of workshops. Why Attend? Whether you're looking to dive into the craft of writing, meet new people who share your passion or find inspiration in a supportive environment, Winter Wheat Writing Festival has something for you. BGSU Fine Arts Center & Wolfe Center for the Arts ArtsX is a showcase and celebration of the arts at BGSU! This year’s event examines PROCESS (noun: a series of actions taken to achieve a particular end) and PROCESS (verb: to walk or march). This annual winter event is free and open to all ages.  Musical, theatrical and dance performances Exhibits and demonstrations  Hands-on arts activities Holiday shopping for unique, handmade gifts Guest Artist: Gabriel Brass Band The Gabriel Brass Band honors the rich history of New Orleans jazz music while infusing their music with the fun and funk of the Motor City! Spearheaded in 2011 by fifth-generation musician Dameon Gabriel, Gabriel Brass Band is a family tradition passed down for six generations. Cultivating AI Literacy: Classroom Innovations from a CFE Community of Practice

In this session, you'll explore innovative classroom materials designed to enhance student AI literacy—developed by a CFE Community of Practice. Six faculty members will share practical frameworks that address key dimensions of AI learning: how generative AI works, how to craft effective prompts, how to recognize bias, how to navigate ethical questions, and how to maintain essential human oversight. You’ll engage directly with each presenter’s materials through guided discussion and hands-on activities, leaving with adaptable resources and concrete strategies you can implement right away. Discover ways to integrate AI literacy into your courses while fostering critical thinking about emerging technologies.  Why you should attend: Identify key dimensions of AI literacy relevant to your discipline.  Incorporate AI literacy concepts into your course materials using cross-disciplinary examples.  Apply strategies to promote critical thinking about emerging technologies.  To register for this event, use the Fall 2025 Campus Partner CFE Session Registration Form.  Advance registration is required. Registration will close one business day before the scheduled event. An Evening with author Bonnie Jo Campbell

The Arts at BGSU will host a book reading and Q&A session with Bonnie Jo Campbell, the best-selling author of six books, most recently a novel, The Waters.  Her 2009 collection American Salvage was a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and her 2011 novel Once Upon a River was made into an award-winning feature film in 2019. Her work is set in her home region of Western Michigan among working people seeking a place for themselves in our times. Books will be available for purchase at the event. Campbell will be available for book signings immediately following the onstage presentation in the Wolfe Center Lobby. This event is free and open to the public.

"The Legacies of James Baldwin": A Poetry Reading and Lecture with Saeed Jones

In celebration of the James Baldwin Centennial, poet and cultural critic Saeed Jones will give a poetry reading and lecture.  Saeed Jones is the author of the memoir HOW WE FIGHT FOR OUR LIVES (Simon & Schuster), winner of the 2019 Kirkus Prize for Nonfiction and the poetry collection PRELUDE TO BRUISE (Coffee House Books), winner for the 2015 PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award for Poetry. His poetry and essays have appeared in the New Yorker, New York Times, Oxford American and GQ among other publications. His most recent book ALIVE AT THE END OF THE WORLD (Coffee House Press) won the 2023 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Poetry. Jones is also the 2024-2025 artist-in-residence in the Media, Health and Medicine program at Harvard Medical School. His next book HOME OUT THERE, a memoir, is forthcoming from Washington Square Press. He co-hosts the podcast VIBE CHECK with Sam Sanders and Zach Stafford.
